A Quick Guide To Positioning Your Home Cinema Speakers

By: Festival Chick

If you are lucky, own a home cinema system, you will know all to well the battle that ensues when it comes to placing your speakers in order to get maximum impact. The following therefore are a few simple guidelines to follow so you can be sure to make the most out of what is sure to be one of your prized possessions.

Centre Speaker

A lot of people don’t realize this but the centre speaker delivers more than 50% of the sound from your surround sound system meaning it is one of the most important speakers of the set. The whole point in having a centre speaker is to allow the sound to be anchored to the action happening on screen. When positioning your centre speaker you should place it immediately below your television, preferably as near to it as possible. If you have a wall mounted television you might want to consider getting a wall-mountable centre speaker which can give maximum experience.

Front Left and Right Speakers

The front and right speakers act to provide a wider soundstage thereby creating the realistic experience. Commonly the front and right speakers handle the music and special effects and move left and right with what is happening on screen to create the feeling of movement.

Front and right speakers are usually the bigger of the speakers and can come in floor standing speakers, bookshelf speakers and satellite speakers. For the best experience it is recommended that floor standing speakers are used as these give the best sound however they take up more room and so bookshelf equivalents are a decent compromise!

Positioning your front left and right speakers it is pretty self explanatory, they sit to the left and right of the television. You should make sure that the speakers are positioned relatively close to the television and more importantly are positioned so they angle toward the listening area.

Surround Speakers

Producing the atmospheric, ambient sounds, surround speakers are what brings it all together and makes you feel like you are in the middle of all the action. Commonly home cinema systems come with 2 surround speakers however depending on your preference you can have more.

Surround speakers tend to be a lot smaller than the other speakers and therefore this jeopardises the sound quality a little. You can invest in better speakers such as floor standing speakers however this is not always feasible and also generally not necessary.

Placement of your surround speakers is important as you want to create a realistic three dimensional experience. Therefore when positioning your speakers make sure they are angled toward the listening area. For maximum impact it is wroth investing mounting brackets and speaker stands which allow you to better angle the speakers.

Subwoofer

The subwoofer enhances the bass by delivering crucial low-frequency sounds giving the soundtrack a much fuller feel. Special effects like explosions and thunder are nothing without a subwoofer and so you should never underestimate its use!

Unlike the other speakers in the set, you have much more flexibility when it comes to placing your subwoofer as low-frequency sound waves are omni-directional however it is still recommended that it is positioned near to the listening area.

So that concludes this simple guide. There are of course other factors to consider and when setting up your home cinema system and like worth most electrical goods it is well worth reading the manufacturer guidelines. However by taking the above into account you should be able to get the most out of your system and create the best listening experience possible.
