A Warrior's Dream

A WARRIOR'S DREAM

The far bank shivers, the black depth swallows the colors of exhausted trees. The weighted gray clouds cascade, spilling colorless rain. Remember the confluence. Remember the engorgement.

Imagine that an enemy has been following you, and will follow you all the rest of your life, that as you breathe the sparkling air, he may be within arm's reach, that even in the silent light the shine on everything may be evidence of his fatal proximity.

You don't know the face of your enemy, so how can you fight him?

Later, the sun howls its challenge into the tired afternoon, falls into a cloud, calls to the cold river, then passes like the flight of a dream. Filaments enter the startled river, murmuring messages. Then, as elusive as laughter, a red sparkle.

In your dream, passion buoys your steps towards an unfamiliar place. It is enticing and perilous. The shadow of what you fear darkens everything, you understand without regret, and your heart sings.

Allies prepare to fight alongside you, because they believe you’ll do the hard things.
