About Courage...

By: Dennis E. Coates, Ph.D.

“He that will not sail till all dangers are over must never put to sea.”
Thomas Fuller (British clergyman, 1608-1661). Having courage means taking prudent risks—taking action in spite of fear.

Everything involves some risk. It seems that in life, the rule is—the greater the gain, the greater the risk of loss. To have what you want, you have to be willing to move forward, even it means tolerating certain risks. If you’re not willing to do that, maybe you shouldn’t get involved.

It’s perfectly natural to feel fear when confronted by danger. Fear is a healthy survival mechanism. It reminds you to stop and think before going ahead. But fear is a powerful emotion. It can easily take over, keep you from thinking logically about risks and prevent you from doing what you have to do.

When your fear calms down, it’ll be easier to take a closer look at your situation and find out what the risks really are. Maybe the potential downsides are too much to bear, but then again, maybe not. You’ll be able to tell whether the potential gains outweigh the potential losses. You can even come up with a plan—how you’ll protect yourself in case of your “worst case scenario.” Smaller risks require less courage. Go for it! You’ll gain familiarity and comfort that will be there for you later when you need to take bigger risks.
