Admit It, You're Crazy! Quirks, Idiosyncrasies, and Irrational Behavior

By: Judy Reiser

Do you refuse to take the top newspaper on a stack (even if it's perfect)? Insist that the toilet paper hang “over”? Wait for the phone to ring at least twice before answering even if you're next to it? Keep returning to the refrigerator hoping that something new to eat has materialized?

You’re not alone.

I should know. These are a few common quirks exhibited (and confessed to) by otherwise normal people. For my books, Admit It, You're Crazy! Quirks, Idiosyncrasies, and Irrational Behavior and And I Thought I Was Crazy! Quirks, Idiosyncrasies and Meshugaas, I interviewed over 2,000 people about their outrageous, outlandish and downright ridiculous eccentricities. From hilarious bathroom behavior to funny money and unconventional clothing habits to eating and sleeping peculiarities to germ-a-phobia and more. People do the darndest things!

Some of our quirks are very funny, some of them are strange, some are charming, and some are damn good ideas! All of them are very human, intriguing, tasteful, and absolutely true. Quirks transcend gender, age, race, nationality, income, and marital status. Everybody's got 'em!

Some idiosyncrasies you might be slightly embarrassed about, others you claim sole ownership of because of their ingeniousness. People will either think of you fondly because of them, or it will irk the hell out of them, and they won't want to have anything to do with you. Let's face it, they're what make you, you.

Here's one a lot of you guys may recognize: When you get dressed, you put on your pants, zip up the zipper, button the button, and buckle the belt. Then you get your shirt, unbuckle the belt, unbutton the button, unzip the zipper, tuck your shirt in, and do the whole thing up again. Why don't you put your shirt on first!!!?

Ladies, don't laugh. We may dress more efficiently, but we're just as quirky as the guys: In a social situation, women usually go to the ladies' room in pairs or groups. If two couples are out to dinner and one of the women excuses herself to go to the ladies' room, the chances are pretty good the other woman will go with her. Can you imagine a guy doing this? “Hey, Charlie, I'm going to the men's room. Wanna come?”

This book is not attempting to solve, define, or make excuses for some of the more common or uncommon idiosyncrasies. Its intent is simply to help you recognize them, laugh at them, and breathe a little easier. It should comfort you that you're not the only one who:
•orders a big, greasy hamburger and fries, then washes it down with a Diet Coke.
•goes to the gym to exercise but requests a top locker so you won't have to bend down.
•spends hundreds of dollars without giving it a second thought but will not buy Tropicana orange juice unless it's on special.
•flips through a magazine at a newsstand, then reaches for a fresh copy to buy because the one you were flipping through is no longer new.

Admit it, you're crazy!

Judy Reiser began collecting quirks when she divulged something crazy she does (she doesn't remember which one it was–there are so many) and her friend shared something he does. After having a good laugh about it, she soon discovered that everyone has quirks. She has been observing, gathering, marveling at and laughing about quirks ever since and personally interviewed thousands of people for her three acclaimed books: Admit It, You're Crazy! Quirks, Idiosyncrasies, and Irrational Behavior, And I Thought I Was Crazy! and "In a Cell Phone Minute". She is recognized for helping to bring the subject of quirks and idiosyncrasies to the forefront. Her humorous / human interest books have received much media attention and excellent reviews/excerpts in prestigious publications. Judy has been a guest on numerous radio and television shows. She lives in New York with her husband, who insists that if she had written the quirk books as autobiographies, they would have been much longer!
