By: Adam Berry

Sri Chinmoy was born in 1931, Chittagong, India; in what is now Bangladesh. Official biographies say that at the age of 12 his parents passed away and he then went to the Sri Aurobindo Ashram with his seven sisters and brothers. Here he practiced meditation and athletics. He excelled in athletics finishing first place in the sprinting 100 metres on several occasions. From an early age he had many profound spiritual experiences and this inspired him to begin writing mystical poetry.

In 1964 he traveled to America and began teaching his spiritual ideas and practices. He attracted sincere seekers and this led to the formation of the first Sri Chinmoy Centres in Puerto Rico and Jamaica. There are now many centres in America, Africa, Europe, and different parts of Asia. In addition to teaching his disciples meditation, Sri Chinmoy also lectured at universities throughout the world, these included, Harvard, Dartmouth College and Oxford and Cambridge in the UK. In recent years he has stopped giving lectures instead he prefers to give concerts of meditative music. These free concerts have attracted large numbers of people in locations such as the the Kamakura Buddha in Japan and at several major European capitals

Sri Chinmoy’s path is based on universalist Hindu religious beliefs. He teaches that through prayer and meditation a seeker is able to raise his consciousness and feel a connection to his “inner pilot” or God. As well as advocating an inner life of spirituality Sri Chinmoy also advocates taking part in various activities to express spirituality through various outer activities. From a meditative state, Sri Chinmoy has composed a large body of writings and art. Writing on a variety of genres and dealing with a wide range of spiritual topics they are primarily aimed as a guide to spiritual practice."

Sri Chinmoy’s teachings also place great emphasis on the benefits of physical exercise. Chinmoy himself has run several marathons and a couple of ultra marathons. He is also the founder of the Sri Chinmoy Marathon Team which promotes running races around the world. It has become one of the leading promoters of ultra distance running with the sponsorship of the 3100 mile Self Transcendence race every summer in NY. The tenth edition of the 3100 Mile race has recently finished with a record 12 runners completing the distance

In effort to promote the ideal of global harmony and greater friendship Sri Chinmoy has frequently traveled around the world to encourage others in their projects. Sri Chinmoy is also the founder of The World Harmony Run. This is a long standing initiative to spread global harmony through the dynamism of running. Many 1000s of people have participated in this global torch relay. Runs are held annually in Europe, America, Australasia and parts of Asia. The aim of the run is to give people the opportunity to take part in an event which seeks to bring people together in harmony and friendship. The World Harmony Run is not a political event and does not seek to raise funds instead it suggests that to bring about world harmony we must first change ourselves. Sri Chinmoy says if we can have inner peace and harmony this will spread to others.

“If you can create harmony
In your own life,
This harmony will enter
Into the vast world.”
