Bringing your pet to the US

In case of cats and dogs, the US Public Health Service requires that animals brought into the country be examined at the first port of entry for evidence of diseases which have risk of transmission to humans. Also, dogs must be accompanied by a valid rabies vaccination certificate written in English.

Endangered animals, migratory birds, marine mammals and certain injurious wildlife may not be allowed entry without special federal permits. As per the US law, Turtles have certain restrictions and monkeys are not imported as pets under any circumstances. All birds coming into the country require a permit from the US Fish and Wildlife Service.

If permitted, all pets must be imported under healthy, humane conditions as per the law. The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) regulations require that careful arrangements be made with the carrier for suitable cages, space, protection and ventilation. Cleaning, feeding, watering and other necessary services must be provided to the pets during their transport and till the disposition to the owners.

As per the US law, every imported container of pets must be plainly marked, labeled or tagged on the outside with the names and addresses of the shipper and consignee, along with an accurate invoice specifying the number of pets contained in the shipment.

Dogs, cats and turtles are free of customs duty. Other pets imported into the US, if subject to a duty, may be included in customs exemption if they accompany you and are imported for your personal use and not for sale.

It is advisable that before you import your pets to the US enquire at the country's embassy or consulate and the concerned authorities dealing with the import of pets to the country. They will guide you what to do and what not to do while bringing pets to the US. Also, you should be aware that, till their dispositions to the owners, pets will be detained at the importer's expenses at the entry point or the port of arrival.
