Fourteen enthusiastic young tree planters from the Army Cadet Force will get the opportunity to meet His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales on Tuesday 29 June, during his visit to Portmeirion in Gwynedd. The Cadet Forces have teamed up with the Woodland Trust to plant 150,000 native trees to mark the cadets’ 150th anniversary. They are half way to meeting this ambitious target, having already planted 75,000 trees. The 14 army cadets who will meet the Prince got the chance to make their mark earlier this year when they helped to plant 1,200 trees at on the Crogen Estate, near Corwen. One of the cadets, 16 year old, Lance Corporal Antonio Jacovelli from Prestatyn detachment (Clwyd & Gwynedd ACF) said: “We’re really looking forward to meeting His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales. We enjoyed planting the trees at the Crogen Estate and I’m looking forward to seeing them again in the future. It will be great to see the little saplings we planted grow into a real live forest.” Colonel Frank Hewitt, who acts as the key link between the cadets and the Woodland Trust says: “The cadet units have gained a high reputation for woodland creation, carrying out their various tasks with skill, enthusiasm and cheerfulness in all types of weather and conditions. The cadets who take part find the task very satisfying. They can see the results of their efforts and recognise that it is truly a worthwhile task.” The 75,000 trees have been planted across the UK at nine Woodland Trust sites, four private estates and one Ministry of Defence site, as well as 13,000 trees planted within local communities. The plantings represent the lasting legacy of the cadet movement and its continued appeal to young people. The national Cadet 150 events will conclude with formal tributes during Remembrance weekend in November. The cadet movement dates back to 1860 and today is one of the oldest and most successful voluntary youth organisations in the world. A force to be reckoned with, today it numbers 131,000 young people led by 25,000 adult volunteers in well over 3,000 sites across the country.
