Choosing Your Destiny Or Letting Your Destiny Choose You

By: Nikki Defelice

Growing up every child has a dream. They want to be famous, rich and happy. They want everything in the world, while doing as little as possible. At some point in a child’s life they need to enter reality. See what is really going on; realize the fine line between what is possible and what is impossible. Lucky for me I am still in fantasyland, and it doesn’t seem to be kicking me out anytime soon.
Everyday I wake up thinking I’m just a normal kid, the drama continues on it’s whirl wind path affecting everyone with a little gust of wind. However if you ask my friends about me they will smile, laugh and say “she’s going to be famous.” Just what every 17-year-old girl needs to hear. Talk about boosting the ego. Just as your mind has set yourself on a pedestal someone points out that it’s just a cloud with no support. It will continuously thin out and separate unless you add more density. But with density comes a commitment and with a commitment comes the big question “Is this really what I want to do with the rest of my life?” There is no right or wrong answer to the question; its purpose is to place you back in reality. Even when your dreams are more fun and you don’t want to leave, you have to choose, do you want the results of your dreams, or do you want to live your dreams?
Back in grade 8 I fell in love. I was allowed to be myself and be accepted at the same time. I could say what I needed to say and I knew that if I didn’t want anyone else to hear it they wouldn’t. There was a real connection, stronger than any friendship and big enough to protect me. Now you must understand, I wasn’t some silly girl saying that I was going to be with a boy for the rest of my life. It was me saying that the bond that I formed with writing was unstoppable. This is what I love, what I am passionate about, and what I could never live without. I saw it, wanted it, grabbed it and held onto it. The bumps that were coming were unexpected and hit me like a rock.
Try going through high school saying, “ I am going to be a writer!” Do you know how many times you will be told to get real? Unfortunately the words got the best of me, I gave up writing and decided to become an accountant. This being my new dream I took accounting in grade 11, this time it was my turn to wonder what was I thinking. The numbers just were not for me. Words are my life; they help me to understand. Writing was my calling, it was meant to be my destiny.
Now in my last year of high school my destiny is clear in sight. I signed up for Co-Op in order to learn the ropes of writing. I was placed with Sue London, a local Children’s Author and Motivational Speaker. In her words she was about to “Kick my butt” and that is exactly what I needed. Sue knew I had a gift, it was a talent that could not be hidden, she helped me uncover it and showed me dreams can come true. I have been with Sue for 2 months now and she did exactly what she said she would. She “Kicked my butt!” I am now a published author, writing books for children. My first book, Bath Time With Bubbles encourages children to have fun in the bath. With the help of Bubbles, the rubber duck, children learn to enjoy bath time as well as how to help clean up after. I guess my friends had a point when they said I was going to be famous. Who knew that I would be a 17-year-old published children’s author? Writing is my destiny, I am well aware of that now. However did I choose my destiny or did it choose me? I guess it doesn’t really matter because all of my dreams are coming true.
