Diversity Rules: No One on Earth Is Exactly Like You

By: Dennis E. Coates, Ph.D.

Philsopher Edmund Burke said: “Toleration is good for all, or it is good for none.”

No matter how the appearance, beliefs or ideas of others may differ from your own, each person deserves your attention, patience, respect and acceptance. If you’re tolerant of only certain people, you may have some prejudices you’re not even aware of.

It’s not always so easy to accept people who are different from you. Certainly it's easier to relate to people who look, think or act more as you do. It’s tempting to criticize someone whose words or actions don’t align with your opinions and ideas. Maybe you have trouble understanding their point of view, especially if it’s not like yours.

In truth, there's no one on earth exactly like you. You have to tolerate the differences if you want friends. In fact, this diversity is one of the great richnesses of life. Welcome opportunities to interact with people who aren’t like you. Every person has value; it just takes a little time to dig beneath the surface to find it. Once you get beyond the superficial differences and come to know another person, you’ll discover the common ground. The animosity or disapproval you may have felt will be replaced by an appreciation for the unique qualities of a fellow human being.
