“What matters is not the size of the dog in the fight, but the size of the fight in the dog,” said Paul “Bear” Bryant, legendary college football coach (1913-1983). Enthusiasm means focusing your motivation and desire. Some people are willing to put an amazing amount of personal energy into something. They do it with intensity. They stay with it longer—they never quit. Such people accomplish a lot more than an average person. This kind of desire has nothing to do with how big you are or how big you talk. It has to do with the size of your heart. Not everyone has the same goals, and not everyone wants to pay the same price. Maybe the things you want are easy to get, so it doesn’t make sense to bust your backside every day. Maybe you’d rather take it easy, avoid the stress and enjoy each day as it comes. Or maybe you believe you’ll get lucky or eventually find an easier way to get what you want. You have the capacity to work at a higher level and do a lot more than you ever imagined. Doing something with that intensity will teach you a great deal and boost your self-confidence. It can be exciting and meaningful to want something so bad that you’re willing to work harder than anyone else to get it. And if you invest that much of yourself, you greatly improve your chance of getting it. Is there anything in life you want that much?
