Extraordinary Success: Are You Willing to Pay the Price?

By: Dennis E. Coates, Ph.D.

Walter Cronkite, American journalist (1916- 2004), said: “I can’t imagine a person becoming a success who doesn’t give his game of life everything he’s got.” It's very
rare to hear about a highly successful person who hasn't worked long and hard to get where he or she is now.

Highly successful people know that there’s really no secret to success. They simply do what most other people aren’t willing to do. They learn what they have to learn. They work nights. They work weekends. They work until the work is done. They keep working in spite of countless problems, disappointments and frustrations. They pay a high price that most people wouldn’t think of paying.

Plus, there are no guarantees. Without a certain amount of luck, all that effort could come to nothing. At least you have a chance. If you live in a free country, where effort is usually rewarded, you have a really good chance.

When you look around, you probably don’t see many people “giving it all they’ve got.” Most people are content to lead normal lives and seem to do just fine. It may be hard to think of anything that would motivate you to make the kind of sacrifices necessary for a higher level of success.

Do you have all the finer things of life? Probably not. If there are certain things you wish you had, they may come at a high price. I'm not talking about the money - but what you'd need to do to earn the money to get what you want.

You have the strength within you to do all things involved in paying that price, but you may not want to. It's a personal choice, and it's fine either way. You can reflect on what you really want in life, and decide whether you want to make extraordinary sacrifices to achieve extraordinary success.
