Every job has three aspects: (1) Technical: activities unique to your industry, business or field; (2) Managerial: using resources wisely; (3) Interpersonal: communicating, interacting, serving and leading others. How well an individual does any of these things is influenced by four major contributing factors. A supervisor can have a positive impact on all four factors, thereby helping a team member improve performance. Here’s a brief explanation of the four factors from the perspective of the performer: FACTOR #1: Awareness – Does the person know how well he or she is doing? Does the individual have information about: What's expected? How others view his or her work? How to accept feedback? Why he or she behaves this way? The consequences of his or her actions? What's going on in the workplace? To improve awareness an individual needs ongoing feedback about his or her performance from the people who have observed it. FACTOR #2: Competence - Can the person DO what needs to be done? Does the individual: Understand the basic principles? Have the right skills? Use proper procedures? Apply best practices? Have enough experience? Have the physical ability to do the job? To improve competence an individual needs specific training, learning references, coaching and ongoing feedback while applying the new skills on the job. FACTOR #3: Motivation – Does the person WANT to do what has to be done? Does the individual: Believe the activity is important? Sense the need to do it? Have a positive attitude toward doing it? Feel comfortable and natural doing it? Feel it will help to achieve goals? Think he or she will be rewarded? To improve motivation an individual needs reasons, incentives and goals for achieving results. FACTOR #4: Support – Does the person HAVE what is needed to do his or her best work? Has the individual been given: The responsibility to do it? Adequate authority and team support? Standards, guidelines and procedures? Current information? Enough time? Tools, equipment, supplies, etc.? To improve support an individual needs the resources that empower and enable the desired outcomes.
