One of the more difficult things to address in a child care center is maintaining a fluid line of communication with everyone. And there are so many things to get in the way. Among the most common things that get in the way are different parent schedules, vacations, sick days, lack of interest, a perceived lack of time, and just putting off thinking there will be a better moment to talk. It just doesn’t work. No one can go home from the daycare experience without knowing what happened that day. If they do, the lack of communication problem seems to grow exponentially. And realizing that parents of young children frequently don’t have time to read long letters sent home, we needed to come up with a solution that would help parents and eliminate frustration on the part of the staff. One thing we decided might work was placing a large easy erase board near the main entrance. We named the board The Busy Bee because it’s job was to announce quickly the highlights of what were going on at the Center. For example: “School Picture Day is next Monday. Come to school before 9 AM.” We also found it helpful to share exciting community notes too. Such items as birth announcements, school graduations, or anything that the community could quickly join in to celebrate, if only with a comment or smile. The Busy Bee is a big hit with parents and teachers because it “talks” to everyone and because the easy erase board is only 24” x 36” space is limited. That’s good because you have to think before you write. And that generally means everyone is eager to see what announcements are on the board.
