Give and Serve...for the Right Reasons

By: Dennis E. Coates, Ph.D.

Max Beerbohm said, “To give and then not feel that one has given is the very best of all ways of giving.”

Service means giving your time and talent to benefit others.

It’s best to help others because you really want to. When you give from the heart, your contribution seems effortless, because you’re totally committed to what you’re doing. It doesn’t feel like giving at all. It feels like fulfillment.

In a busy life, there’s so little time for giving. Maybe you’d like to help others, but you may feel you need a little help yourself. In the mail, on TV, and at work you’re faced with countless requests to contribute. Even if you feel you should do something, it’s hard to give and not resent it.

Give what you can to something you really care about. So many people and organizations need your help that you’re sure to find an opportunity for service that touches your heart. Give because you want to, and you’ll have your greatest impact. You’ll make a difference, and you’ll get more out of it than you put in.
