By: Kevin Shaw

A big thumbs up to you, you have once again chosen to get off the couch and start exercising once again. Your workout routines have been decided on and you"ve chosen them to get your body back into lean muscle shape quickly. Your previous workouts have always used free weights like barbells and dumbbells. You want to change things up a bit but you are not sure how. No worries, you have many options to make your routines seem fresh and new.
First thing that needs to be settled is where are your workouts going to take place? The easiest option is being a gym member, because you gain access to weight machines, free weights and even kettle bells. Kettle what you say? You heard right, kettle bells. There are a lot of people that use these types of free weights whether they are at home in their basements or at the local gym.

Let’s explore the details of what are and how to use these kettle bells. For me, I was always pondering the question how do you gain muscles. When I came upon these free weights my workouts were rejuvenated and I was once again waking up sore in the morning (and that was a good thing).

Kettle Bells 101
So what are kettle bells you might ask? Kettle bells are similar to most dumbbells in that they are usually made of cast iron. They allow the user to perform ballistic type exercises that work your cardio as well as building strength and flexibility. If you don"t know what they look like, just picture a cannonball with a handle connected. So that in a nutshell is a description of the kettle bell. You should now have a basic idea of what it is and what it looks like. We should now push on to how to gain muscles with these weights in our workout routines.

Now you may have been thinking that seems like a interesting shape for a weight? Yes it is a funny shape but the shape of the weight directly corresponds to its use. What you will notice the first time you grab one is the location of their centre of mass. You are going to immediately feel the difference once you lift each of these types. The dumbbells have their centres of mass right at your hands, whereas the kettle bells have their centres of mass away from your hands (remember their shapes; ball and handle).

You will use these types of free weights in swinging or ballistic style routines which would be pretty tough with a normal barbell.
These swinging type routines allow the user to increase strength and endurance in their lower backs, legs and arms as well as increasing your gripping strength. Kettle bell workouts are also a really great way to work your core because these exercises require you to use muscles from different body parts all at once. Dumbbell exercises usually only focus on one muscle group at a time.

You should now know what these different looking free weights are and why so many people have decided to start working out with them. Others just like you who were trying to figure out for themselves how do you gain muscles, have used these weights and have found that they bring a whole new dimension to their workouts. There are a multitude of different kettle bell specific workouts on the internet nowadays. Check them out and bring your training to a whole new level.
