It might seem like a straightforward exercise, but buying shoes for children requires more than simply a good eye for fashion. A few tips can make buying children’s shoes a lot less trying on your patience. 1. Have your child’s foot measured professionally in a shoe store even if you buy the shoes themselves at a bargain store. This should be done about every four months, considering the frequency of growth spurts in toddlers and young children. 2. Not every shoe is appropriate for every child. When choosing shoes, gather a selection. Put each pair on your child and have him or her run around the store. Just a walk across the floor won’t do it. He or she should get a feel for how the shoes fit and be able to tell you if they pinch, hurt, or are uncomfortable anywhere. 3. Your child’s feet will go up a half a size about every three months until he or she is two and a half years old, then the same amount every four to six months. This growth won’t slow down until around six years old. When considering size, don’t buy a shoe that fits perfectly. A shoe should give a little bit of room to grow, or you will be buying new shoes every other month. There should be a space of about the width of an adult thumb between your child’s big toe and the inside front of the shoe. 4. While it’s fun to buy tiny trainers and Mary Janes for a pre-walking child, they are purely for decoration. Shoes are unnecessary until a toddler is walking consistently on his or her own. If you need to save money, it won’t hurt to wait a while to buy shoes. 5. When buying a toddler’s first pair of shoes, they should be stable and flexible. Stay away from trainers that have thick soles, no matter how fashionable they may be. Thick soles make shoes that are not flexible enough to help a toddler learn to balance and be steady on his or her feet. Likewise, stay away from the cute, soft-soled booties that look similar to leather socks. These lack stability at all.
