Thousands of people across the UK have intolerance to one type of food or another. For some of us having an intolerance has very little impact on your daily life however not everyone is that lucky. Food intolerance has been known to contribute to a variety of different symptoms some of which are difficult to treat. Such symptoms include irritable bowel syndrome, migraines, bloating, fatigue, diarrhoea, and more and can play havoc with people’s quality of life. One such food group that people are commonly intolerant to is seafood. Many people automatically consider this to be fish however there are many different types’ fish from halibut to salmon. Of course seafood also stretches to shellfish such as crabs and lobsters. Having seafood in our diets is very important with the Food Standards Agency recommending we make it an integral part of our weekly diets so being intolerant can throw up issues for the health conscious. So how do you determine is seafood is having a contributing factor on the symptoms troubling you? One of the most widely used methods for determining whether a food group is causing you issues is through an elimination diet. This works by restricting certain foods from your diet for a concentrated period of time and then mentoring and taking notes on symptoms. If symptoms decrease when a certain food is removed then assumptions can be formed that this particular food is problematic. The problem with elimination diets however is that they are very time consuming. With so many food groups it can take a vast amount of time before and conclusions can be reached and unfortunately not all of us have this time. Thankfully innovations in scientific testing have seen the rise of food intolerance testing. These tests measure food-specific IgG antibodies and help to identify different food types that you may be sensitive to. The tests are a simple figure prick blood test which can be conducted at home and then sent to a laboratory for analysis. The benefits of food intolerance tests is that you can find out which foods are causing you problems very quickly which will allow you to make dietary changes that can help you feel much better. However it is important that before any dietary changes are made you consult a practicing nutritionist or doctor. For this reason it is recommended that food intolerance tests are conducted as part of a food intolerance programme which provides on-going assistance one you have received your results. Hopefully this article has helped you to understand how you can test yourself to see if you are intolerant to fish.
