As with any kitchen appliance, proper maintenance is paramount to longevity of the appliance. This is no different with fridges, chest freezers and fridge freezers. Each serves a certain set of purposes, and requires both general and specific maintenance to continue functioning as designed. Most people do not typically think about general maintenance on their appliances. They will only call in a service specialist if something breaks stops working properly. General maintenance and tune-ups will greatly reduce the risk of these appliances malfunctioning. For example, with standard kitchen appliance refrigerator, things will inevitably get spilled or knocked over. If left alone, although refrigerated, mould can still grow which is both unhealthy and unpleasant to smell. Regular cleaning of the unit’s shelving system and containers will ensure a clean and healthy refrigerator. Regular tune-ups are also a step one can take to ensure their fridge remains in good working order. There are a number of other things around one’s home which gets routine tune-ups, so why not the fridge? Just as companies will come out to service air conditioners and furnace, to lawn mowers, washers and dryers, there are also companies which will come out and service your fridge. This could be anything from ensuring the coils are clean and the coolants are topped of. Just like with any other appliance or vehicle, this routine maintenance will ensure continued performance for years to come. Another thing to keep an eye on is the ice build-up in a chest freezer. From time to time, a wall of ice will form on the inside the freezer. If left unattended to, this ice will actually cause undue wear and tear on the appliance and could lead to it malfunctioning and not working as advertised. If a thick layer of ice is noticeable place the contents in another freezer or cooler, unplug the unit, and leave the lid open. Generally after a short time, the ice will have melted to the point it can be removed or drained from the unit itself. Most units have a drain in the bottom for just such maintenance. Once the ice has been removed, towel off the inside of the freezer, plug it back in and close the lid. Shortly it will be ready to be re-stocked, and will continue running without the additional stress of the ice build-up it had previously. All of these things are routine maintenance and do take a little bit of time. If done regularly however; the life of the appliance will be much longer than if the maintenance is not done. Not properly maintaining one’s appliances will only lead to more money being spent down the road to either fix or replace them. Preventative maintenance not only saves the appliance owner money, but it grants them the peace of mind that comes with not worrying about their appliances working as advertised.
