Over the years, your wooden floor is bound to suffer wear and tear and need some maintenance. Using wood filler and floor paint is a great way to rejuvenate your floor and will keep it looking good for longer. Not being a professional yourself does not mean that you could not carry out this task all on your own. To save money and at the same time feel proud of yourself, you can read this guide through and fix your wooden floors quickly and easily. Wood fillers are pretty easy to apply and are available in all big DIY stores. Firstly you should move all the furniture carefully; you don’t want your expensive furniture getting in the way. It’s important that you remember to open all of the windows and doors to fully ventilate the room then start by cleaning the holes and cracks. Remember to remove any nails that might be in the way. Use a filler knife to fill in the wood filler and then remove any filler that may be excess. Wood fillers come in different colours to match to the colour of your wood. Wood fillers will not crack or shrink and can help prevent the reoccurrence of wet rot. You will then have to do a couple of other easy steps before you can apply your floor paint. Start by vacuuming the area to get rid of any dust, then wipe the floor with white spirit on a damp cloth, then leave it to try before you continue. Once those steps are complete you are ready to apply the floor paint, you should start by applying wood primer to any knots in the wood. The primer will protect the wood knots so that they won’t leach through the surface of the wood and discolour the floor paint. You have quite a few options for when it comes to applying the paint, you could use a roller, brush or a pad. However it is worth remembering that the pad comes with some floor paints available on the market and is therefore easier to use than a brush or roller. Start to apply the paint standing in the corner of the room, furthest from the door so that you will be able to apply the floor paint in long smooth strokes for the best finish. Apply 2-3 coats of floor paint, allowing 4-6 hours between coats. Now you can stand back and feel proud at the brilliant finish your floor now has.
