How You Should Use Teak Oil

By: DIY Enthusiast

In order to look after your hardwood garden furniture investment, you would be advised to coat it in order to keep it looking its best. Among the protection choices is Teak Oil, which is suitable for use on all types of hardwood garden furniture, including teak. You will get a better quality finish on new furniture by choosing an oil over a stain, as the wood colour and grain will be looking at their best. Oils need to be maintained more often than stains, however the finished look after using oils is well worth the additional effort.

In order for the oil to dry quicker, ensure you are working in a well ventilated area, but outside in good weather will ensure it dries much quicker, especially if working under warm sunlight.

Teak Oil naturally nourishes, protects and enhances all types of hardwood garden furniture, by deeply penetrating the wood. This replaces oils lost through weathering, including frost and UV penetration. Teak Oil restores old garden furniture as well as protecting and maintaining the appearance of new hardwood garden furniture.

Remove all previous coatings such as paint, varnish and wood stain. Lightly sand to remove any loose wood fibres. Avoid the inhaling the dust, wear a suitable face mask when sanding. Remove dust, dirt and grease by wiping over with white spirit. Always test for finish on a small inconspicuous area.

Ensure the surface of the wood is dry and clean, and apply the teak oil liberally using a soft, dry lint free cloth. This will prevent any fibres from ruining the finish of the oil. Work the oil lightly into the grain, and then wipe off any excess oil.
Reapply the oil as necessary once the previous coat has dried. This will provide extra protection and a darker coat of colour. Three coats will provide adequate protection, and ensure you leave to dry between coats. In good weather conditions, teak oil should be touch dry in about 6 hours.

Maintain your furniture regularly with a further coat of Teak Oil to ensure lasting protection, and this would also prevent any fading that could be caused by UV rays.

For best results, repeat these steps every year. This will keep your furniture protected from rain damage that can discolour and crack your expensive wooden furniture. Teak oil is available at most DIY stores, usually available in very natural colours to allow the natural grain and beauty of your wood to show through.
