How car seats could save the life of your child

By: Car Enthusiast

Using car seats for children up to the age of 12, or under 135cm in height (whichever comes first) is compulsory in the UK. But apart from it being the law, a child car seat can offer vital protection for your little one in the event of an accident.

In a minor crash at a speed of 30mph, an unrestrained child can be thrown forward with a force of up to 60 times their body weight. This is why it is the law to use car seats – they save lives. Also, using adult seats and normal seat belts is just not safe enough for children.

How do child seats work?

A child car seat designed for the right age and weight will keep your little one properly restrained in their seat. This stops them from being thrown about if you should be unfortunate enough to have an accident.

Crucially, child seats also absorb some of the impact from the crash, making it less likely for the child to be injured.

Proper fitting is vital

For a child car seat to offer the best protection it must be fitted properly. Car seats are often fitted wrongly, raising the risk of your precious child being hurt in a crash.

Manufacturers normally provide step-by-step instructions on how to install a seat safely, but if in doubt it is best to seek the advice of an expert. Quality retailers should be able to show you how to fit a car seat in the right way, or even fit it for you for added peace of mind.

Some added luxuries

It’s vital that your child is safe, but it’s a bonus if they are happy and comfortable. Some seats offer added extras such as adjustable head supports, swivelling parts (which make it easier to get the seat into the car) and washable covers.

Get the right car seat

Having the right child car seat can be a load off your mind - choose wisely and you can enjoy a safe and comfortable journey.
