How to Fill Cracks and Holes Around Your Home

By: DIY Enthusiast

It doesn’t take much to damage wood or plaster. Anything from the decorations you put up on the wall to your kids playing around the house can leave your walls damaged. Over the years these cracks and holes expand, damaging the substrate finish. For the quickest and easiest solution, wood and wall filler can be picked up from any DIY store and the repairs can be completed by even the most novice of DIY’ers in just a few minutes.

Application of wood or wall fillers is a fairly simple task which takes only a few minutes to complete. There are different types of fillers for cracks and holes around your home and the different surfaces you find around your home, but the way you apply them doesn’t change, just follow these simple steps:

1. The first step is to start by cleaning your wall or floor. Make sure you have removed any lose nails and make sure all the dust has been removed from the area. For wall cracks, make sure you dig out around the crack with the side of a filling knife and clean out any dust.

2. For the easiest application, use a filling knife to help you fill the hole. Squeeze the filler out of the tube directly into the hole and then leave the filler slightly proud of the hole when levelling off.

3. Use the wetted filing knife to smooth over the hole and leave to dry. Most fillers are quick drying so should be touch dry between 5 and 60 minutes after filling.

4. Once dry, if needed, sand over the area to leave a smooth finish which is now ready for painting.

Quick and easy to complete, wood and wall fillers should provide you with the smoothest finish to get the best out of your home.
