Alphabets evolved from pictographs, ideographs and syllabaries. Pictographs were used to represent items that could be easily drawn. These marked the beginnings of alphabet systems. Trade helped to form alphabets because people needed to keep track of how many items they traded. A drawing of the sun is a symbol for the spoken word “sun.” Cattle and others animals are also symbolized by different letters of the alphabet. This is how people started to keep records. Ideographs are a number of pictographs combined to represent ideas that could not easily be drawn. The Chinese pictographs for sun and tree are combined to symbolize the spoken word “east.” Early systems of writing were of the pictographic or ideographic variety. Most of the ancient languages used these methods. An alphabet represents the separate sounds of a language. Most alphabets evolved from pictographs and other alphabets and were not created specifically for how they were used. For example, Greek evolved from Phoenician. Alphabets are basically systems of written symbols that represent spoken sounds, which are combined to form the words of a language. Different languages can use the same alphabet to represent their language. Some languages add diacritic or accent marks to indicate different variations of tone. Thus letters are modified to represent different languages tones. Magical alphabets came into being when people started using numeric values for each symbol of an alphabet for the purpose of divination. They analysed the numeric values of words to determine positive and negative influences. In numerology the numeric value of each letter in a word is added up. The sum is then reduced to a number between one and nine. Numerology is used by millions to this day. Gematria is also used to study the words of the Bible and Torah. The Sibylline Oracles used magical alphabets. They used alphabetic letters drawn upon dice to predict the future. There were many variations of the methods used in divination but they all used letters of the alphabet. Some of them are still in use today. Rune stones use the Nordic alphabet to forecast the future. This system is created by drawing the Nordic rune alphabet upon stones—a letter for each stone. The stones are always drawn from a bag so the person selecting them cannot see which ones they are choosing. The stones that are chosen are the ones used for the divination. The future is determined by the meaning of the selected runes and how they combine with each other. The early definitions were developed by watching people who had certain combinations and seeing what happened to them. That outcome was then incorporated into the body of forecasts and definitions. This was a very accurate form of fortune-telling for generations and it has survived to the present day. The runes of the Nordic alphabet were also used as charms and decorations. The different Nordic races used many of them in the woodwork and decoration of their houses. Simple geometric patterns that duplicate rune designs are also used around the world as decoration on houses as well as in the patterns on textiles and other items. They each had a God or Goddess assigned to them and had numerical values. The only people who noticed this were others who knew the methods that were being used. A good magical alphabet should be able to be decorative and work with out people knowing they are magic. Each alphabet has different symbols. Alphabets varied regionally and were always evolving. The best example of this evolution of characters can be seen in the Constitution of the United States. It was written only a little over 200 years ago. Many letters have changed significantly in shape since that time. A striking example is the letter “s” which in the original manuscript resembles an “f.” Different magical alphabets were devised for different purposes. Codes and ciphers were used for secrecy. They were used to represent different ideas or beliefs in an abbreviated context. The Christian IHVH is an example of this. It is considered the ultimate name of God and incorporates all of the other names of God within its letters. Abbreviations of concepts of thought and names of God are very common in Hebrew and Christianity. AGLA is also another abbreviation. It means “Thou art great forever Oh Lord!” The Celts also had magical alphabets starting with the Ogham alphabet. Ogham was invented in Scotland and it was used all over the British Isles. Ogham was the root of the Tifinag, and Kells alphabets. Ogham is completely different from any other alphabet used in Northern Europe. It was replaced by the Roman alphabet but never discarded as it was put into secret and magical usage. The letters are arranged along a ridge or line. The number and placement of strokes on this ridge indicates the identity of the letter and how it is being used. Each letter symbolizes trees and other aspects which have a magical meaning used in occult practices. Different alphabets also have the same numeric meanings attached to particular letters. An example of this is A which is aleph in Hebrew and means wealth. Its numeric value is one. A is Alpha in Greek and its numeric value is one and means wealth. Feoh is the first letter in the rune alphabet. Its phonetic value is f but it also represents wealth. This is a simple example. There are also complex explanations for each number. Linguistic studies indicate all alphabets are an interlinked system of meanings even though their origins were geographically separate from each other. Magic is a word used to explain things that are not explainable by science. Science insists on an explanation for everything. Advances in science can now explain some things considered magical in the past. Quantum physics is now explaining the very things that people in centuries past scoffed at. Perhaps the old magic and spell books will someday be classified as scientific texts on how the universe works. Different countries, races, and religions have had their various philosophical and magical schools of thought. Hermetic magic has been around for 5000 years. Hermetic Magic explains the principles of how Magic works. These principles are called the Seven Hermetic Principles. All magical disciplines and schools use these principles. A lot of major religions also use them and with similar phrasing. Man has, through the ages, looked for the knowledge that explains how the universe works. Man’s interest in understanding and analysing our world is constant. This curiosity and need to know are how the principles of magical alphabets originated. The numeric value for each letter and each word represents a set value. This set value includes a vibration, a note, and colored energies. Words written with magical alphabets are a blend of all of the letter vibrations, notes, and colors which form a melody and lighted pattern. Each letter has a melody and lighted pattern which is its energy signature. It is this energy signature that makes a magical alphabet work. I decided to develop my own alphabet using the energies of the Now or incomprehensible mind of God. The symbols do not have any religious values that have to be believed in to be used in ceremonies or many magical methods.
