How to keep your wooden fence looking healthy

By: DIY Enthusiast

A wooden fence around your garden is a decorative element that many people find attractive. A new fence is an investment, and if taken care of, is something that can help towards increasing the value of your home.

So why is it now important that you protect your fence? The simple answer to this is because if you don’t protect your fence, it will not last as long. Protection is important because if left untreated, your fence will be susceptible to water-damage, weathering, mildew, mold and algae. This will quickly result in your fence looking lifeless and grey.

How to keep your fence looking healthy in 3 easy steps:

Step 1 – Choose application method
There are a number of application methods which can be used when applying fence treatment.

Choose to either apply by brush or by fence spray application. Brush is the more traditional way to treat a fence but it can be time consuming. For the ultimate in speed and convenience choose a power sprayer and get the job done in half the time of a brush.

Step 2 – Choose a product
There are many types of fence treatment on the market, and to understand which one will suit your fence best, you should check with your local DIY store. However, you may want to consider products that include waterproofing, UV-resistant, fade-resistant and rot and decay-resistant properties.
Some products may need to have more than one coat applied in order to get the best results. Make sure you read the back of pack and understand the application instructions.

Choosing your fence paint colour is easy nowadays, as many products can be found in a comprehensive selection of colours starting at conservative browns and reds and ranging through to blues, greens and golds for those more adventurous.

Step 3 – Regular maintenance
You can now relax safe in the knowledge that you have a beautiful fence which is well protected.
However, you will need to perform regular maintenance on your fence in order to get the best out of it. This typically needs to be done between one and five years. If the fence is starting to fade, then it is most likely time for a repaint.
