Teenage is a crucial stage in an individual's life. During this time, many external pressures real or perceived by teens influence them to experiment, make changes or try new things. Because of their own insecurities and peer pressure, many of them get into unhealthy habits including illicit drugs and alcohol abuse. Proper guidance at this point of life makes them sensible individuals. Parental support and supervision helps them overcome these problems which are common at this age.

In this article, we will discuss about the importance of not shying away from conducting drug tests at home to help teens stay away from drugs or alcohol.

Teenage - a crucial transition period: Many researches have shown that human brain takes 25 full years to completely get matured. During 12-19 years (teenage) the brain will still be in the developing stage. Hence, teenagers tend to make wrong choices and experiment with anything new, particularly, harmful substances.

Since teens at this stage of life are naturally prone to risky behaviors, parents should be cautious and observe the typical changes associated with substance abuse or any other unhealthy habit. It is essential for parents to be aware of the signs and symptoms of drug abuse.

Also, during teenage, peers become more important for them than their parents. They feel secured and supported in their company and tend to do things together as a group. If one adapts an unhealthy habit, rest of them may experiment with it and get used to it without their knowledge. This finally results in drug dependence/addiction.

Test for suspected abuse
Test your teenager once you have substantial reasons that he is probably on drugs. There is no harm in planning to test for drug abuse. Once you made the decision to test, you need to do a few things to make sure this is done as gracefully as possible.

There are some who want to drug test their teens at regular intervals. This may be appropriate for some styles of parenting and based on the teenager’s past behavior/environment.

Benefits of home drug tests
Home drug testing ensures privacy and makes your teen feel less offended. It shows your concern for his health and establishes the limits that should not be crossed. Other benefits include:

•Early recognition of unhealthy habits: Many research studies have already proved that drug abuse can start at the age of 12-13 years and peaks during the teen years; hence home drug tests help in early identification of your teen’s unhealthy habits. This allows early resolution of the habit.

•Prevents drug abuse and addiction: Neglecting drug abusing habit in the initial stage can lead to addiction. Early intervention helps parents in preventing their child from getting addicted to harmful drugs.

In the right circumstances, home drug tests can ensure the good health and future for teens. Hence, it is considered as an essential part of responsible parenting.
