If you have not seen the movie To End All Wars, you REALLY should! You might want to put the kids to bed first because there are some really bad words, but the message of the movie is extremely pwoerful and makes you think about what you believe and how you would live that out. The main theme of the movie is based on Jesus's words in the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5): "You have heard that it was said, `Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? And if you greet only your brothers, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect." The movie is about WWII pow's who were held and tortured by the Japanese and made to build a railroad through Thailand to support the Japanese effort of the war. A few questions you might take away from the film: 1) To what extent am I willing to love my enemies? 2) Who are my enemies? 3) How would I respond if I were in their situation? And one that wasn't really posed in the movie directly but made me wonder: 4) To what extent should I and how is the best way to fight evil? The pow's demonstrated love toward their captors, but in the process built a railroad that would allow the bad guys to advance their war effort. So which way is better? Showing love, or being willing to die so others would not be killed or captured and tortured? That question is dealt with in a new book by Os Guinness which I want for my birthday (hint, hint) called "Unspeakable: Facing up to Evil in an Age of Genocide and Terror". Guiness is a brilliant thinker and I can't wait to read his thoughts.
