These are my favorite quotes about self-confidence: “No one knows what he can do till he tries.” - Publilius Syrus, Roman author (Fl. B.C. 1st cent) “Let every man’s hope be in himself.” - Virgil, Roman poet (B.C. 70-19) “They can do all because they think they can.” - Virgil, Roman poet (B.C. 70-19) “First say to yourself what you would be, then do what you have to do.” - Epictetus, Greek philosopher (50-138) I love these because they remind me that wise men have known and spoken publicly about the value of self-confidence for over 2,000 years. I also love what some of my favorite sports heroes say about it. “To be a champ, you have to believe in yourself when nobody else will.” - Sugar Ray Robinson, American boxing champion (1921-1989) “Confidence is the result of hours and days and weeks and years of constant work and dedication.” - Roger Staubach, American professional football player (1942- ) “I had confidence in my ability. You have to. If you don’t, who will?” - Johnny Unitas, American professional football player (1933-2002) “I’ve always believed no matter how many shots I miss, I’m going to make the next one.” - Isaiah Thomas, American professional basketball player (1961- ) “If you don’t think you can, you won’t.” - Jerry West, American professional basketball player (1938- ) Have you ever picked up a basketball and tried to make a shot behind the three-point line? Try it sometime and you'll see how hard it is. Try it several times and you'll see that you just can't do it without believing that you can. To me having self-confidence is like having a savings account. To build your account and draw interest, you have to make regular deposits. Achievement is the cash of self-confidence. But it's not just achieving things. You have to make a deposit. The way you do that is to give yourself credit. Credit your account of self-confidence by acknowledging the worth of your achievement. I've known people who had done extraordinary things in their lives, but talked about these achievements as if they were ordinary and of little worth. This was a sad thing to see, because they often expressed a lacked self-confidence.
