By: hari

Manganese is a mineral found in green leafy plants, nuts, pineapple, seeds,

wheat and tea, raisins, egg yolks, ginseng, hops, raspberry and many other

plants. It is needed for the growth and maintenance of your skin, bone, joints,

and cartilage. Manganese is important for the metabolism of fat and protein and

it helps to maintain proper blood sugar levels in your body. Its also needed

for the functioning of the nervous system. You could say Manganese has its hand

in just about everything going on in the human body.

Its present in large amounts in many plants and animals, but for some reason is

not seen in such large quantities in humans. We do store Manganese in our

bodies, but its only about ten milligrams or so stored in the bones, liver,

kidneys and pancreas. But some should be present in every cell of our bodies,

within the mitochondria. Not much is known about how we absorb and store

Manganese in our bodies but it does have a connection with how we absorb Iron.

Your recommended daily intake of Manganese is about five milligrams for adults,

but some health provider can suggest taking anywhere from two and a half

milligrams to five milligrams.

A deficiency in Manganese can lead to symptoms such as irritability, eye

problems, shakes, sweating, racing heartbeat, cramps, general weakness and

confusion. A prolonged deficiency of Manganese can lead to infertility, damage

to your pancreas, heart disorders, and osteoporosis.

It can aid in the effectiveness of Vitamin E and Vitamin B and glucosamine.

Manganese is used by the body in order to utilize these vitamins by activating

certain enzymes that the body uses in digestion. Manganese has antioxidant

properties as well as being an aid to other antioxidants and can help snatch up

those free radicals which tend to float around the body damaging our cells.

Manganese is primarily touted for use by those with bone, cartilage and joint

problems. If you are suffering from arthritis you may already taking a joint

multivitamin with Glucosamine and Manganese in it.

Also thyroid functioning is concerned with a delicate balance between Manganese

and Iodine. If your body is low in either of these nutrients you could develop

hypothyroidism and thus by taking Manganese you can ensure having a steady

supply of this nutrient. Iodine is already provided in surplus via our table

salt.

Manganese working in combination with Choline will the digestive track in the

absorption of fats.

You should take Manganese supplements if you are suffering from joint,

cartilage, skin or bone conditions. If this is a serious condition you should

consult your doctor first to make sure it doesn’t counteract any medications or

to get an idea of proper dosage. You should also take Manganese supplements or

increase Manganese in your diet if you are pregnant or lactating. And if you

have a poor diet or are suffering from digestive problems you should take

Manganese.
