Founded in 1932, Marcal is among the top 10 largest tissue and paper producers in North America. The company has been successful through four generations of family ownership and has produced a well-respected brand name product with a loyal customer following. Long before recycling became popular, the company pioneered the paper recycling process. Every year, Marcal recycles a couple hundred thousand tons of recyclable paper collected from municipalities and business offices. Quite accurately, Marcal bills itself as "a quality manufacturer of 100% recycled content tissue products." In fact, their products meet or exceed EPA procurement guidelines for recycled content. They offer a full line of paper towel, paper napkins, facial tissue and bathroom tissue products. Marcal Chlorine-free Products Unlike other paper producers, Marcal products are processed chlorine-free (PCF). That is, they do not use any elimental cholorine for pulp and paper bleaching. Furthermore, no mercury is used to produce caustic soda that may be used in the pulping process. Marcal Recycled Products Marcal recently launched a new product line called Sunrise 100% Premium Recycled. These products are made with Marcal's highest ever levels of post consumer fiber. Also new are their Kaofin Fiber clay products, made from the natural clay and unusable fibers that are removed during the recycling process. It involves a specially developed manufacturing process which allows them to recapture the fiber and mineral materials that wash out of the magazines and other glossy coated waste paper. The Marcal Recycling Program With such an intensive recycling program, one wonders how financially successful the company can be. According to American Capital, which invested $38.5 million in Marcal in the early 2000s, Marcal has always been an industry leader. In fact, in the late 1940s, Marcal took the first steps toward recycling, developing technology to de-ink wastepaper so it could be recycled into pulp and used to manufacture tissue paper. By the 1950s, the company had installed a pulping and de-inking mill to supply pulp, enabling Marcal to produce tissue products at a reduced cost and to compete effectively with paper companies using virgin pulp. Marcal continued to expand with the market, introducing new technology and upgrading its processes throughout the subsequent decades. Today, Marcal sells more than 140,000 tons of finished tissue products a year. In the past decade, Marcal has more than doubled its market share in the northeastern grocery region and is currently among the top suppliers of facial and bath tissues, napkins and towels.
