Serena Williams showed an unquestionable progress in her short summer of tennis, but not enough to beat Amelie Mauresmo at the US Open. For some years now, Williams has played some kind of alpha female to Mauresmo, the thoughtful Frenchwoman with the elegant strokes and the fragile psyche. Williams’ advantage had always been her confidence and Mauresmo’s disadvantage on the other side of the net had been that she lost hers to fast to soon. For example, she won three games against Williams in the 2002 Wimbledon semi-finals, and won three more in the quarter-finals of the French Open the following year as Williams smacked clutch serves and clutch forehands in bunches. But that power and strength of Williams might not be as much as an advantage as it used to be. This year Mauresmo, made it to be No. 1 after she decisively swept her skeletons out of the closet by winning her first grand slam singles titles at the Australian Open and Wimbledon. Williams is no longer dominating, after barely playing in the past two seasons because of injuries and family tragedies, she was a wild card to get into the US Open this year. This time Mauresmo had the energy to sweep her out. After being beat by Williams 9 out of 10 previous matches against Williams, and never beating her in a grand slam tournament it was about time Mauresmo started changing the stats. It seems to be of great importance to her, and perhaps that played a role in her dropping off in the second. She is on the top 10; that's certain, to be in the top 10 you have to have consistency, does she have it yet? By now it is a bit hard to tell.
