“Tough times never last, but tough people do.” - Robert Schuller (American clergyman, 1926 - ) Having composure means controlling your emotions in a stressful situation, so you can do what needs to be done. You can expect to have your share of conflicts, problems, crises, emergencies and losses. Whether the situation lasts a moment or years, these can be upsetting times. But if you want to come out ahead, you can’t let yourself be defeated by these experiences. You need to be mentally disciplined enough to keep your negative emotions from taking over. You need to stay calm so you can deal with your situation effectively. When things don’t go your way, it’s natural to feel shock, frustration, hurt, anger or sadness. At times like that, it’s hard to stay cool, calm and collected. It would be easy to give in to your emotions. But if your emotions get more intense, and you act on them, it can only make things worse. You don’t have to be cold and unfeeling to be “mentally tough.” There’s nothing wrong with feeling bad in a bad situation. That’s perfectly natural. But when it’s time for effective action, you don’t want your emotions to immobilize you or cloud your judgment. After you acknowledge your feelings, you can set them aside long enough to look at your situation and decide what to do. During a crisis, you can focus on the problem instead of your emotional reaction. You can calm down and consciously do what’s best for you. Once the worst is over, you can let the emotions take center stage again and experience the impact the events have had on you.
