Michael Jordan's Realistic View of Success

By: Dennis E. Coates, Ph.D.

“Success isn't something you chase. It's something you have to put forth the effort for constantly. Then maybe it'll come when you least expect it." - Michael Jordan

Effort means working hard and giving it all you've got.

Success isn’t a project. It’s not a goal with a plan and a deadline. It’s not something you work towards until you achieve it, and then enjoy the rewards. Success is a way of life, in which you invest every ounce of character you have. The only way to achieve success, no matter how you define it, is to focus on something you care about, and then give 100% to everything you do, every day.

If you’re like most people, you’d prefer to know that if you do X, you get Y. It’s hard to work every day not knowing when, how or even if the payoff will come. When problems and roadblocks set you back, it’s discouraging. Sometimes it seems that a happier life ought to include more rest and relaxation, and less striving.

Like everyone, you want certain things in life. You know there’s a price, and you know there are no guarantees. If you don’t want to settle for less, then don’t. Commit to doing your best, to being the best person you can be. It may sound corny, but you have to adopt this attitude and take this approach if you truly want results. It’s the way of action, the way of quality, the way of learning. The greater reward of Michael Jordan’s achievements is being the person he’s become, not having what he has.
