“Diligence is the mother of good fortune.” - Miguel de Cervantes (Spanish novelist, 1547-1616). Persistence means never giving up. Sometimes life is like a boxing match. You want to succeed, but even if you prepare well and work hard, it almost never happens the way you plan it. Unexpected forces work against you like an adversary. Problems come at you like body blows. Sometimes you feel as if you’ve been brought to your knees, and you wonder whether it might be easier to give up and try something else. But if you want a chance to win, you have to get up again and keep on fighting. As long as you’re still throwing punches, you have a chance. While you’re dealing with tough problems, it’s hard to remain confident and optimistic. Setbacks can sap your strength and drain your resolve. You’ll feel like quitting—anyone would. But once you quit, the fight is truly over, and you’ve lost. Two things can help more than anything to get through tough times. First, expect the journey to be hard. Expect mistakes, problems and disappointments. In other words, don’t let adversity surprise you. Second, as long as there’s any chance at all that you can succeed, simply refuse to quit—no matter what. People quit all the time. Just decide that after most people have dropped out, you’ll be one of those still in the fight.
