Personality Compatibility Test for Couples in Romantic Relationships

By: Dennis E. Coates, Ph.D.

"Who are you? Who, who, who, who?
I really wanna know! Who are you? Who, who, who, who?"
- From the chorus of “Who Are You?”—The Who (1978)

I heard from my sister-in-law that one of their sons is now separated from his wife. “Don’t change your address list yet,” she said. “We’re hoping they get back together.” After two years, our friends in North Carolina are still trying to create a stable, loving relationship. But they’ll be spending the summer apart. Last year, the lady down the street suddenly announced that she was married; a week later, she had the marriage annulled.

Wouldn't it be nice if couples could see issues coming, so they could address them and resolve them early on, or move on to more compatible relationships? Personality is a major component of compatibility—a huge factor in getting along. People who are very different from each other have more work to do. And it’s not so easy to get a handle on someone’s personality. A valid, scientifically grounded personality test can dispel the mystery, and it’s amazing what a personality comparison can reveal.

This was the vision that drove me to develop our latest MindFrames application, "Compatibility Forecast” Two years in the making, we finally published it this week on Initforlife.com! Personality testing has been around a long time, but personality comparison is relatively new. With “Compatibility Forecast,” we broke new ground. There’s nothing else out there quite like it. Created for single people in romantic relationships, it compares the personalities of two people in order to highlight personality similarities and differences.

Millions of people search for a life partner online. The photos and basic “profiles” provided by dating sites may be enough to sort through the dozens of options in a given search. Beyond that, people using these searches know practically nothing about their potential dating partners. Should they send that email inviting first contact? If the mysterious stranger proves intriguing, should they arrange to meet in person? If they decide to date, is this an exclusive relationship? Later, should they live together? Should they get engaged?

These are weighty choices. Building an intimate relationship means making a significant commitment. It can take a long time to get to know a person. Meanwhile, people in committed relationships are "unavailable," even if their soul mate should show up looking for them. With “Compatibility Forecast,” people can quickly identify common ground and possible conflict areas, things that normally take months, sometimes years to learn. Then they can take the next step with more confidence.

Many people would rather not know these things in advance. Maybe it seems scary—too much information. Or maybe they simply like the element of mystery. They prefer to discover things as a matter of course, letting things evolve naturally.

Personally, I’d want to know. I've known the pain of divorce and the joys of a happy marriage. If I were dating again (God forbid), I’d want to know as much as possible about my future partner. If there were issues, I’d want to know what they were right away so I could address them. If the issues turned out to be “too hard,” I’d want to know that earlier rather than later.

Based on a scientifically grounded personality test, "Compatibility Forecast" is designed to help people make these choices. It's available now on Initforlife.com to couples who are already in romantic relationships.
