REIKI - The Universal Life Force

By: ReikiLady

Reiki, pronounced "Ray - Key", translates from its original Japanese language to English meaning "Universal Life Force" or "God-Conscious Life Force." Scientific experiments have verified the existence of this "life force energy" and more and medical professionals are considering the role that energy plays in the functioning of our bodies, as well as the role it plays in the healing process. The recipient of Reiki Energy can feel the flow - this energy has been described in a number of terms, including: warm, tingly, zingy, cool, flowing, electricity.

Dr. Mikao Usui, a Japanese citizen born August 15, 1865, is the known "founder" of Reiki. It is said that Dr. Usui was always interested in the healing arts and was a Buddhist child, who was raised in a Catholic orphanage. Dr. Usui always had an interest in Spiritual pursuits, and in 1914, he was guided to attend some type of 21 day spiritual training on Mt. Kurama. No one is definitely sure what type of class this was or whether it was in the Buddhist tradition or another religious affiliation. It is said that Dr. Mikao Usui, or Sensei Usui, as he was later called by his Reiki students, had spent much time in the past meditating at the "power spots" on Mt. Kurama. There is a waterfall located on the mountain that is said to activate one's crown chakra if one stands beneath the flowing water and meditates. This area is where it is said that Dr. Usui received the clandestine Reiki symbols, on the 22 day he was on Mt. Kurama, which gave him the ability to heal others without depleting his own energies.

As time went on, the news of Reiki Energy spread throughout the area of Japan that Sensei Usui practiced and soon Dr. Chujiro Hayashi, a retired naval officer, received the Reiki Master initiation in 1925 from Sensei Usui. Dr. Hayashi went on to develop the hand positions, the three levels of initiation of Reiki Practitioners and he also opened a Reiki clinic in Tokyo and kept records of the Reiki treatments that were performed there.

Reiki was brought to the West by Hawayo Takata, a woman whose parents were Japanese immigrants and who had been born in late 1900, on the island of Kauai, Hawaii. Mrs. Takata had visited Japan in the 1930's, after the death of her sister, and was taken ill. She sought medical attention in Japan and was told she had gallstones, a tumor and appendicitis. Just prior to her surgery, on the operating table, Mrs. Takata heard a voice urgently say, "The operation is not necessary! The operation is not necessary!" Having never heard a voice talking to her in this manner, Mrs. Takata wondered what it meant. When it repeated it's urgent message a third time, Mrs. Takata found it very unusual, yet extremely compelling. She left the operating room, seeking out the doctor and inquiring about another way, other than surgery. The doctor knew about Dr. Hayashi's work and Reiki clinic and told Mrs. Takata about it.

Mrs. Takata decided that she wanted to try this Reiki healing clinic. She had never heard of Reiki, but she was willing to try it. At the clinic, she received healing treatments from two Reiki Practitioners daily. The heat from their hands was so intense she thought perhaps there were machines of some sort attached to their hands, but found none. After four months of daily treatments, she was completely healed and astonished at the results of the Reiki treatments. She was more curious about Reiki than ever before.

She inquired about learning this mystical art of healing. Dr. Hayashi wanted to teach another woman, besides his wife, the ancient art of Reiki. Mrs. Takata studied with Dr. Hayashi and recieved her First Degree in Reiki Energy. She practiced for a year and recieved her Second Degree. By 1937, she returned to Hawaii as a Level II Practitioner in Reiki. Dr. Hayashi and his daughter soon followed her to Hawaii to assist her in establishing Reiki in the US. Dr. Hayashi intiated Mrs. Takata as a Reiki Master in the winter of 1938 and between then and her transition in December 1980, Mrs. Takata initiated twenty two Reiki Masters in the United States. John Gray was one of the initial twenty two Reiki Masters. This writer's Reiki Master was initiated by John Gray.

This is the history of Reiki as was passed down by this Reiki Master's Sensei.
