Sensible Spirituality Gurus and Teachers By Nita Hickok © 2006 The average person that enjoys spirituality reads articles and books on many subjects. They are all intelligent people who are trying to follow a spiritual path. Yet some people have such problems while others make the proper choices and move on. What is the difference between these choices? Why do some people have no problems while others go from one toxic teacher to another? The differences I have noticed seem to be research and knowing your inner self. Over the years, I have noticed many people are out to find themselves. They believe that is done through external sources. To find yourself you have to look with in yourself. People who are having problems need to realize that listening to inspirational speakers and books may give you new ways to look at life. Anyone can say I am going to do this person’s method and my problems will be gone. The methods work for others yet they still have the same problems. The reason this happens is they are slapping a behavior over something that has to be dealt with before any new behaviors work for them. People who never deal with their inner beliefs and issues are the ones who find the toxic teachers. Magic brings out every flaw with in you so they are transmuted by correct decisions and choices. I myself have gone through this with two groups now. I did not know with the first group what I was getting into with beliefs and ethics. They just plain did things I would not do and my soul would not allow me to do in this group. I tried to do the methods and join in with everyone yet I still had problems. The reason for this was I questioned the teachers and their behavior. I judged my teachers and found them lacking. I should have left the group once I realized their ethics did not fit in with mine. Yet I listened to them and thought that I was the problem. Our faith in ourselves erodes through years of others trying to modify us to act the way they want us to act. I spent twelve years in that group doing magic that I wanted to do and learning techniques that suited me as the teachers were merciless to me. I would not do things I felt were wrong for me to do. The teachers were always upset even if I said it just to them and did not disrupt the others in the group. One just plain wanted me dead and told others that. I had weird occurrences and strange accidents even with the work of hex breaking and exorcisms being dangerous. Yet I persevered and overcame those problems with many lessons learned along the way. This website is a testimony to that fact and my wanting to help others with problems. The main problem I had was I joined the group after a traumatic experience where I did not know my inner self or even if life was worth living. I instead found nothing but problems because I made this judgment when I was reacting instead of thinking. I always suggest the Buddhist science of watching the mind with introspection. It helps to save the person from mental processes that are reactions instead of thoughts. I also suggest removing the energies from all bad experiences so they are resolved where no negative magic can stick to them. I do this to save others from what I have gone through myself. Yet I found my life profession and work that has moved me along my path during one of the worse periods of my life. One of the things that my teacher never taught was ethics, or working upon the inner person. Control was the key word and you had to have control of your magic and emotions. I am sure it made a great many neurotic students as they were taught to do high level work where negativity could attach to these problems. The teacher I picked was a black magician who wanted more power and was full of ego. People who do negative magic can fool others because they are never the evil people we envision as black magicians. They do some good things along with the negative magic. The key to realizing what others are is if they are full of ego. They believe that their personal power makes it right to do harm to others. They are willing to harm and hurt others for their own reasons. I fooled myself and made excuses for him until things happened where I could no longer do so. Rationalization is one of the worse enemies of the mind and magical self. I left the group and the attacks continued from them but they had taught me all of the ways I could overcome these negative energies just by being around them. It brings us into teachers now. Anyone who talks about personal power over the divine power that comes to you from what ever source you want to call it God, Goddess, Buddha, etc is on their way to locking themselves into the cycle of negative magic. It is insidious in this way as it builds the ego and destroys the person. They believe they are a magician that is not into negative magic but the choices and actions they do prove otherwise. It is true of any religion, cult, magical discipline, yoga lineage, or any other name for any spiritual discipline. They may talk a good game but watch what they do and see if they have ethics, how they treat others who they believe are less than they are, and how they care for others. It shows whether that person is a true teacher or not. Never have a teacher who is cruel to others who they believe are less than they are, and show they will treat others badly. Never be with a teacher who destroys others by lust and sex. Never be with a teacher that has no control over the basic instincts that harm others. Never be with a teacher who is a racist, and picks upon groups of people. The most common are treating women poorly if it is a male or males poorly if it is a female. The next most common is racial or using others as a scapegoat if they are gay. No teacher should use anyone as a scapegoat or humiliate a student. The teacher may use themselves as an example after all they had to learn something to be a teacher. I am not saying to judge them but just not to be around them. They may attract others with lessons to learn but you do not have to be one of them. It is how to avoid a toxic teacher or guru. Never be around a group where they talk badly about others, or are required to submit to hypnosis, or mind reading. It means that the teacher is out of control and that they do not pick people that will work together. Never sign over your life savings or financial worth to a teacher either. It is also another form of abuse. A reasonable price for lessons and teachings is one thing. I am talking about the different groups that try to have others sign over property and their life savings. It has happened with almost every form of religion, and groups that exist in this world. Sexual abuse and trying to control all of the members through fear, and oppression are another. Everyone should realize that the divine protects everyone the whole time so harm does not happen except through lack of faith in the Divine. Never allow any group you are in to attach any sort of spirit to you to attach you to the group. I saw this happen with the second group. I had a friend and confidante that I listened to about a group that wanted to help others and would help me with serious problem cases. I have worked alone for years and thought how nice it would be to have help. I trusted him and his judgment. I should have just trusted that if the divine meant people I work with to be healed it would be all the help I needed. I knew from the first day the leader was a disaster and just tried to keep my promises so I did not break my word. Yet people who fooled themselves were doing what I did with my first group rationalizing and not wanting to hear what the leader was doing. No leader should have to use hypnosis, manipulation, mind control, and magic against students to control them. They accepted what he did to them and went down the path of learning lessons in life. I had learned that lesson in my first group and was very happy to leave the situation behind me. I believe this should show to listen to yourself and do research. Anyone who read this could see the obvious mistakes I made. I listened to friends, and not myself. I tried to trust someone I felt uneasy about from the first saying that my friend said they were Ok. I have to say that most of the things were hidden from me until I met the person but I never should have ignored those first feelings. His ego was out of control and he manipulated and used others. All of these are danger signs. A leader who has to compete with others and never listens to anyone is always in charge of a toxic group. A good teacher or guru will allow you to attend meetings until you make up your mind. He or she will not force you into choices. They will never allow you to join their group until they are sure you can get along with everyone. They will tell you this fact and try to be a good person about telling you the things that make you hard to live with in their family. They will not read your mind or control you but suggest paths of learning to suit you. They will allow you to be yourself while you are learning the different methods. They will realize that you may be different from others and need to do a few things differently in the methods to get results. They will never attach anything to you or align you with a lineage or practice that will not work for you or harm you. They will have ethics and show them in how they act and live. The teacher is normally patient and helps students with solutions to self-destructive behavior. Good teachers do not need to control anyone and work upon themselves. Good teachers learn from their students as much as their students learn from them. A teacher or guru is just that a teacher or guru. The faith you have should be in the divine sparks with in them and the methods that suit you. It is the only way to find your path and be sensible spiritually. God or by whatever name you call the divine forces are the only true ones to believe in as you will never fail yourself believing in the divine. I hope my examples show you how you need to work upon yourself before, during, and after studying any method or teaching. You have to deal with what life has done to you and not submerge your feelings or rationalize. Research all magical methods or schools so you know it will be correct for you and your path. Never accept any bad actions and never do anything that you feel is wrong for you. Everyone will learn these lessons anyway including any that you missed. Life along a magical path will teach it to them. The divine is the only true thing that will never let you down in your life.
