When the UK enters a cold snap and snow starts to fall, the whole country grinds to a halt. Trains get cancelled due to “ice on the line”. The roads don’t get gritted enough so they are full of black ice, slush and compacted snow. Cars slide dangerously all over the place and offices are empty as people find it nigh on impossible to get to work. But what should you do if it snows? Should you brave it into work at all costs, stay at home in the warm, or get out there and make the most of the white stuff? Let’s discuss. Go to Work If you need to get to work you should consider the safety of yourself and any passengers you may have first. If the roads are dangerously icy or impassable, stay at home if at all possible. If you need to brave it in, you should think ahead. Pack things like a snow shovel, thick blanket, de-icer, a warm coat and a flask of hot tea or coffee in case you get stuck. You should also seriously consider purchasing snow chains or winter tyres if you live in a remote area. They can help to provide much more traction in winter driving conditions. Rest at Home Thanks to the advent of fast broadband connections and the fact that most people have PC’s or laptops at home, you should be able to do most of the work you want to do from home if you have a desk job. If your job involves being out and about or on the road, a quick call to your boss in the morning to let them know just how bad the snow is in your area should suffice. The last thing the company that you work for will want to do is risk injury of their employees. So, stay at home, keep warm and wait for the weather to improve is another viable option. Play in the Snow If the worst comes to the worst and you do get stuck at home, don’t forget to enjoy the snow too. Take a lunch break and stroll to your local park, or head out after working hours. If you have kids, buy them sledges so they can race down hills as well as build snowmen and have snowball fights. You’ll love going on a sledges just as much as they will so make sure you buy one big enough for an adult and a child. There are plenty of high street and online retailers in the UK that offer snow chains or snow sledges. Just be prepared and order in advance, as soon as the weathermen forecast snow the country goes mad.
