The next time you are out driving in the city, take notice on the amount of electricity that is required to power all the lights and billboards. Take note the next time you are at work or even during your leisure time at home. See how much of what we do requires electricity. Sometimes you wonder to yourself whether enough is enough! Do We Have Other Options If you think the way I do, you too have become a little nervous at how reliant we are on the Big Power Companies. I feel it is important for us to be self sufficient so I researched solar panels and their uses and truly believe each of us should. The main details of your research should show you how to go about off the grid living using solar power. Building your solar panels is much easier than I would have thought and not nearly the cost that most people associate with living off the grid. Solar Power 101 Let"s discuss some of the important details of solar panels and how they function. Solar panels allow us to capture the sun"s renewable energy and convert it into clean electric power. Solar panels usually consist of many arrays of photovoltaic cells that are connected to each other to form a grid like structure. Solar rays (i.e. radiation) produced by the sun are used by the solar cells. The cells convert this radiant energy into electrical energy for immediate use or stored for future us in batteries. How Much Electrical Energy Can Be Produced By These Cells? The amount of electrical energy produced is determined by the quality of the cells in the array, the types of materials that the cells have been created from and the amount (i.e. time) of solar exposure. One unfortunate fact is that solar panels will slowly reduce their efficiencies the longer you use them. This is because they are constantly degrading as they are being used. You will also need to know the number of solar cells available in your array. When you put all these factors together, you can see that a small scale project to power a small light or a large scale project to power your entire house is possible. This scale of project will allow you the freedom of off the grid living. The next step for you is to find a diy solar project. There are many available and the good ones will actually give you the step by step process for creating your first solar panel. A simple internet search for "how to build a solar cell" will get you a massive amount of hits. There will be no shortage of products for you to review. Remember to start small and once you"ve mastered the building techniques, move on to larger scale projects. Good luck and have fun building your solar cells. You deserve to give yourself a pat on the back for doing your part to make the environment a better place.
