Sound Machines for Your Sanity

By: Melissa Nathans

If you"re a new parent, you"re probably wondering why no one ever told you how your sanity might be tested once in a while. After all, you are probably sleep deprived and completely full of new experiences that you never saw coming. This isn"t to say that you aren"t loving every moment of it, but at this point, you"ll probably be wondering what could save your sanity. Well, we have one idea: sound machines.

You"re probably wondering what we"re talking about, but you should know that sound machines can really be helpful for new parents, especially ones with fussy babies who are hard to get to sleep.

How, exactly, do sound machines do this? They can save your sanity in one simple way: by getting your baby to sleep.

This is, after all, what you need to save your sanity, and your baby needs to learn how to go to sleep on his own. Even if you think you"ve tried all the tricks, you haven"t seen everything until you"ve seen how these machines can work for your baby. They have, in fact, been recommended by doctors and scientists as a way to help babies sleep easily and relax during the day.

Just as many adults sleep better when there is white noise in the background to drown out the creaking noises in your home or the car sounds from the nearby highway, babies sleep better with some white noise. Instead of using a fan, though, as many adults might, it is better for babies to use sleep machines, which specifically mimic sounds that babies like, such as heartbeat noises and rhythmic, wave-like noises that are like the noises that babies would hear in the womb.

These sounds not only drown out background noises that can wake lightly-sleeping babies, but they also soothe babies with sounds that are familiar to them. Even the fussiest of babies will calm down when they hear noises like these, and babies who don"t sleep heavily can stay asleep more easily when these noises are present in the background. If this sounds too good to be true, realize that it actually isn"t.

Although a sound machine may not make your baby fall asleep automatically, it can help calm and soothe even the fussiest of babies, making bedtime that much easier. Besides this, sound machines can help you save your sanity by helping your baby - and therefore you - get more sleep each night.
