From time to time, life deals a heavy blow. But nearly always you can find reasons to hope. I once asked my friends for affirmations that serve as rays of light for the hard times. Some are original thoughts, and some are quotes. Hopefully, you'll relate to some of what has been shared here, reflect on it and use it to cope with your situation: "The next time you're challenged with adversity, remember that you have the strength within you to do what you have to do, no matter how hard it is." "Take a few minutes each day, no matter what you're faced with, to identify and appreciate the positives in your life. Even something simple like watching the sun rise or set can help you stay grounded and remind you of the joyful things you can count on." "This too, shall pass." "God's way of hugging us is through the arms of a friend." "I am lovable and capable." "Your best friend was once a stranger." "I have the strength I need for today." "Live every day as if it's your last but plan to live forever." From a bumper sticker: "What Would Scooby Do?" "Don't it always seem to go, that you don't know what you've got 'til it's gone...?" "Opportunity is often marked PUSH." "There's no such thing as being lost—you're just taking the scenic route...There's more than one way to do things and reach your goals, and normal is just a term used by people who want to direct how you live your life." "And we know that all things work together for good for those who love the Lord and are called according to His purpose." "When the darkness is all around you, and the light is gone from your view, remember to hold on to the promise of light in your memories ... these glimpses will carry you through, at least until you can feel the strength that comes with the warmth of the sun on your shoulders once again." From The Notebooks of Lazarus Long, by Robert A. Heinlein: "Certainly the game is rigged. But don't let that stop you. If you don't bet, you can't win." "To succeed you must fail early, quickly, and often. Consume deeply the information contained within each failure." From Charles Dickens: “No one is useless in this world who lightens the burdens of another.” "Be not afraid of the future, for if you should ever come to it you will have the same wisdom that guides you at the present." From Thomas Merton: "The things I thought were so important have turned out to be of small value. And the things I never thought about, the things I was never able to measure or expect, were the things that mattered." From Maya Angelou: “In the silence we listen to ourselves. Then we ask questions of ourselves. We describe ourselves to ourselves, and in the quietude, we may even hear the voice of God.” From Simone Weil: “It is the light falling continually from heaven which alone gives a tree energy to send powerful roots deep into the earth. The tree is really rooted in the sky.” From Leo Tolstoy: "Love is life. All, everything that I understand, I understand only because I love. Everything is, everything exists, only because I love. Everything is united by it alone. Love is God, and to die means that I, a particle of love, shall return to the general and eternal source."
