The First Step To Becoming A Success

By: Edward W. Smith

Want to be a success? Sounds good, so let’s outline the first step needed to get you to where you want to be.

The first step to success is to clarify what it means to be a success. Then we can turn this information into goals that will make it easier for you to attain success. Success means many things to many people; so take some time to be clear on what you really want. Is it financial success alone, financial success balanced with other parts of your life, or is it success in some area of your personal life? Remember the Chinese curse, “may you get what you ask for”, and be totally clear on what you want.

Life Coaches spend a great deal of their time with clients on this clarification stage, because it is so crucial. The payoff is that once your goals are clear, many of the obstacles we throw up in the way to achieving things, such as procrastination, etc, are diminished. Once the big picture is clear, you will find new energy and purpose in your life

Clarifying what you define as success is a much bigger job than most people realize, so let’s break the process down into more manageable pieces.

I suggest you start with generating lots of ideas of what success means to you. Ask yourself this question. I know I am being success when…………. What’s the action, or event, behavior or feeling that tells you, you’re being successful. Keep working on this until you get a reaction that makes you feel totally satisfied.

Assuming money played a part in the previous exercise, exactly how much money would match your idea of success? Take time to visualize yourself having that money, how would you spend it, where would you go, what would you do. Don’t say, I don’t care, just give me the money and I’ll figure it out later. You need to figure it out now, or you can find yourself having achieved a goal that turns out to have no meaning for you. I am sure you are familiar with all the stories of people that have made to the top of their careers and were miserable. Also knowing how much money you want helps you know how far you have to go and also when you can stop. Yes stop, believe it or not, many people become so financially successful, they forget what they wanted the money for and never take the time to use it in the way they wanted to.

So now you have an idea of what you want to do with your success, and how much money it takes to achieve this dream. The next step is to begin to lay out options available to you to attain this success. Assuming it is financial success you are seeking, look at the target number you came up with and look at what kinds of jobs, activities, etc., could generate those kinds of numbers. One figure might suggest a civil service job, another figure might suggest going into your own business, and so on. Do you see how we are moving away from just a dream and into something you can take action on and achieve what you really want?

Couple this financial target that reflects you real desires, with an inventory of where you are at now financially, plus an inventory of your personal skills, education, experience, etc. Now look at where you need to be in order to move into the activities you have picked that will lead you to the kind of financial success you picked. Look at the gaps in education, training, skills, etc that you need to fill, before you are ready to move into that income producing activity you have targeted. Next put together a plan that bring you in synch with what is needed. Target courses you need to take, experience you need, contacts you need to develop and so on.

So now you have moved from a general sense of wanting success, to having a detailed plan of what steps you need to take to achieve the life you have dreamed of. Was it worth the time? Of course, but there is one thing left to do.

Take action. No plan means anything without action, so get to work right now and you are on your way to your dream life. Have a good trip and I’ll see you at the top.
