“Take time to deliberate, but when the time for action has arrived, stop thinking and go in.” - Napoleon Bonaparte (French emperor, 1769-1821) Being decisive means acting on your best option at the most opportune time. Good decisions are based on reliable information, and they’re made at the best moment to produce the desired result. But it takes time to gather and digest facts, and it’s important to weigh the advantages and disadvantages before you take action. At some point, it will be too late to act effectively. A wise decision-maker knows when to act and when not to act and when to use the time available to evaluate what to do. When you’re not sure what to do, and the stakes are high, you may feel reluctant to go ahead. It isn’t always easy to get information about the alternatives. You can easily get caught up in “paralysis by analysis” if you keep studying the options without making a decision. But every decision has a “deadline.” You could easily wait too long to act. You’ll be okay if you remember that it’s important to choose when to make your decision. When you’re not sure what to do, just ask yourself, “How much time do I have?” “When is the best moment to go ahead?” “What’s the worst that could happen if I do X or if I do Y?” You can figure out the best time to take action. Go ahead and pick your favorite option as soon as you can. If you still have time, you can continue thinking about it. Later, when you know you have to act, you can “just do it.”
