Things You Should Know About Food Intolerance

By: Dr. Gillian Hart

Recent stats published by leading charity Allergy UK has stated that almost half the population (45%) suffer with food intolerance. However food intolerance as a health concern has yet to hit the mainstream meaning many of those who suffer the symptoms of food intolerance are not able to get the relief they need.

Before getting into the prevention and management of food intolerance however, it is worth understanding a bit about how food intolerance is brought about. Food intolerance is a non-allergic reaction to certain foods or food groups. Food intolerance is triggered due to the body having difficulties dealing with certain foods and this is because the body doesn’t produce enough chemicals to break the food down when digesting. The result produces various symptoms to the sufferer which can be both mild and severe and can include IBS, headaches and migraines, fatigue, bloating, eczema, respiratory problems, and more.

The problem with the onset of food intolerance symptoms is that they are delayed meaning it is difficult to pinpoint what foods are causing the problem. The outcome of this is that many of us are walking around unaware that a simple thing like your diet could actually be contributing to your problem. But how do you determine if you have a food intolerance let alone find out which foods are causing you problems?

Well the answer to this lies in scientific advancements that has seen the development of food intolerance tests. For many years elimination diets were the most effective ways to discover problematic foods. These worked by restricting certain foods for a concentrated period of time and then monitoring for any change in symptoms. Of course a method like this is very time consuming and validity of the results obtained can be questionable due to the nature having to form your own conclusions.

Food intolerance tests however banish both problems by being both quick and also more accurate. The tests can be found in two groups, those that you can take to determine if you have food intolerance and those that can test you to determine which foods your body is sensitive to. Both tests can be conducted in the comfort of your own home and results are quickly analysed at a laboratory.

Once you find out which foods are causing you problems you can then begin to reduce your intake and therefore reduce the problematic symptoms. Those that have done this have experienced a rapid decline in symptoms thereby improving their quality of life. Due to the need to make changes to your diet it is highly recommended that nutritional advice is sought as eliminating foods yourself can actually do more harm than good. For this reason it is recommended that any food intolerance test you consider taking is done so as part of a food intolerance programme. These programmes can help you by providing recipes and alternative foods to ensure that you are still getting the vital vitamins and minerals needed.
