Tips On Using Wood Paint To Paint Wooden Surfaces

By: DIY Enthusiast

If you are a DIY enthusiast, you will know that before applying paint onto wooden surfaces, it is important to use a wood primer. As wood is porous, primers work by providing a base coat to which paint can then adhere to. If your surface is not prepared properly, no top coat paint can give your surface a long lasting finish.

After you have moved all of your expensive furniture, you should always start by cleaning the surface thoroughly, removing any old nails. The primer will make sure that when you apply paint, your surfaces are protected from future damages. Primers dry quickly so the complete job can be done in a day.

Paint work should not terrify you, if you follow the guide thoroughly you will learn that painting wood is a fairly simple task. Apart from making your wooden surfaces appear attractive, painting your wood will also protect it from damages in the future. Although wooden surfaces can give your house that extra touch of glam, they are highly prone to deterioration which is why you need to take proper care of the wood in your home. Paint won’t only provide the glossy finish; it will also make sure your surface stands up to everyday wear and tear.

Application of primer and top coat paint is fairly easy,
1. If you have previously painted wood make sure you sand the paint back thoroughly before you start to prime and paint your wood
2. Throughout this job its best to use a good quality synthetic brush
3. Start with the primer; load the brush and apply the primer onto your wood evenly, following the grain of the wood
4. Leave to dry for a couple of hours before applying a second coat
5. Once the primer is fully dried, lightly sand the wood down with fine sandpaper and remove any dust or dirt
6. You are now ready to start applying the topcoat. Again, load the brush with the paint and follow the grain of the wood with an even coating of paint
7. Leave to dry for a couple of hours and then apply a second coat.

Most primers and topcoat paints are water based, so if you do make a mistake, slightly wet a cloth and remove the affected paint.

Once you are done you will be glad you painted your wood as the paint will protect your surfaces from knocks and scratches for years to come.
