Tips to Staining Exterior Window Frames

A wood stain is the ideal way to protect your exterior woodwork.

In order to prepare the wood to get the most out of your stain, you need to:

1 - Make sure the wood is clean and dry

2 - Lightly sand back removing any loose flaking coatings.

3 - Wipe off any dirt, dust and grease with white spirit

4 - Previously stained or weathered wood should be sanded, then washed with white spirit and allowed to dry

5 - Other finishes such as varnish or paint must be completely removed before application of a stain.

6 - For the best possible finish use a good quality brush designed for the application of water-based finishes.

Once you have prepared the wood, make sure you mask off the glass to avoid leakage and drips, and make sure you work in manageable sections, so areas don't fully dry out before you have finished them.
