Uncertainty...Risk...You'll Need Courage to Succeed

By: Dennis E. Coates, Ph.D.

I’m afraid to do this because...

...I’m not sure I can get it right the first time.
...I’ve never done anything like this before.
...I may appear inept and foolish and embarrass myself.
...People expect me to do something else.
...People may not like what I’ve done.
...I don’t know what the consequences will be.
...I may fail.
...It may end up costing me plenty.

Should I, or shouldn’t I?

“What would you attempt if you knew you could not fail?”
Robert Schuller (American clergyman, 1926 - )

“It is not because things are difficult that we do not dare; it is because we do not dare that they are difficult.”
Lucius Annaeus Seneca (Roman playwright, B.C. 4-A.D. 65)

“Only those who risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go.”
T.S. Eliot (British poet, 1888-1965)

Venturing into unknown territory can be scary. You’re not sure what will happen. It’s tempting to stick with what you know, because it’s familiar and comfortable. You’re less likely to make mistakes. You may feel it’s better not to take risks when the outcome is uncertain. What if it doesn’t work out? Who knows what could happen?

Courage means being afraid that you might lose something valuable, then taking action anyway. Almost everything you do involves some risk, however slight. “What have you got to lose?” Good question. You may not want to risk losing your life, health, home or relationships. But often you stand to lose less than you think. And the probability of that loss may be minimal. “What’s in it for me?” Another good question. You can compare the potential risks with the potential rewards.

Do I dare? Do I dare? The world belongs to those who are willing to think, and then take action.
