We Can Serve

By: Dennis E. Coates, Ph.D.

Albert Schweitzer said: “There is no higher religion than human service. To work for the common good is the greatest creed.” Service means giving your time and talent to benefit others.

You can make a difference in the lives of others. All around you are people who need a helping hand. They might be family members, friends or coworkers. Or they might be people you’ve never met. You can get involved in any of the many organizations that rely on volunteers. Your contributions can have a big impact on your community.

You may doubt that one person can really make a difference. You have your own problems to worry about. You may not want to add other people’s worries to the ones you already face. And deep down you may feel that people should be able to take care of themselves.

Even if you have only a small amount of time to give, that’s all it takes to positively influence someone else’s life. Donating even an hour to a person or cause can help. And in enriching your community, you enrich your own life.
