The first and foremost goal of a crisis communication plan is to protect the integrity and reputation of the company in the event of a crisis. This could be anything from a disaster to a rumor or even a positive event that could be perceived negatively if the message is not controlled. Simply being a company of integrity is not enough. You must communicate like a company with integrity. Most accredited PR professionals will tell you to “tell the truth, tell it all and tell it fast.” In order to do this in the heat of a crisis, you need to have already prepared and practiced a formal crisis communication and response plan that includes these elements: Positioning Designated Spokesperson Media Policies and Procedures Practicing Tough Questions Prepared Statements Sample News Release Collateral Materials Key Audiences Contact Log Speaker Presentations Handling Media Interviews
