What to put in your Crisis Communications Plan

By: Laura L. Link, APR

The first and foremost goal of a crisis communication plan is to protect the integrity and reputation of the company in the event of a crisis. This could be anything from a disaster to a rumor or even a positive event that could be perceived negatively if the message is not controlled. Simply being a company of integrity is not enough. You must communicate like a company with integrity. Most accredited PR professionals will tell you to “tell the truth, tell it all and tell it fast.” In order to do this in the heat of a crisis, you need to have already prepared and practiced a formal crisis communication and response plan that includes these elements:

Positioning
Designated Spokesperson
Media Policies and Procedures
Practicing Tough Questions
Prepared Statements
Sample News Release
Collateral Materials
Key Audiences
Contact Log
Speaker Presentations
Handling Media Interviews
