When You Come to a Fork In the Road...

Legendary New York Yankees catcher Yogi Berra once advised, “When you come to a fork in the road, take it.” Being decisive means acting on your best option at the most opportune time.

From time to time, you’re faced with choices. No matter what you decide, there will be consequences, and the best option may not be obvious. You may hesitate while you’re weighing the advantages and disadvantages. It’s okay to study the situation, as long as you have time. But you need to make your decision while you can still affect the outcome. If you lose that opportunity, it won’t matter much what you do.

Sometimes one option looks as good as the other. But what if one path leads to success, and the other doesn’t? It may not be easy to compare the alternatives, and there could be a course of action you haven’t considered. A lot may ride on your final decision. Even if you can figure out which factors are important, it’ll take time to gather reliable information. Meanwhile, you window of opportunity could close on you!

You know there’s no crystal ball. You have to do your homework. If you hope to make the right choice, you need information. But more important, you need to know when to make your move. So first find out how much time you have; then use that time to get the facts and compare your options. Then, at just the right moment, take action.
